AMU Celebrates the Harvest Festival of Pongal

Johor Bahru, 19th January 2019 – The MBBS Indian Students of AMU and Student Experience & Learning Support (SELS) Department organized a joyous Pongal Celebration at AMU’s Johor Bahru campus. It was spearheaded by 50 staff and students. The event witnessed a celebration of different cultures coming together and attracted a lot of support from the AMU community.

Pongal is mainly celebrated to convey appreciation to the Sun God for providing the energy for agriculture (in the Tamil language the word “Pongal” means ‘overflowing’ which signifies abundance and prosperity.)

During the event, the students cooked milk in a clay vessel and made a circle while waiting for the milk to bubble over. When it started to bubble and overflow, the students then added freshly harvested rice grains and sugar to the pot.

The event had objectives of sharing the colours of Indian culture with AMU’s community of local and international students. They were highly encouraged to attend the celebration in their traditional attire. AMU students also showcased their Indian traditional performances, which kept all guests entertained throughout the celebration.

Creating the sweet rice involves boiling over a concoction comprising rice, milk and sugar.

The passion, efforts, and dedication shown by the students in understanding and spreading the Indian culture were highly commended.
