Since 2004, Asia Metropolitan University (AMU) has evolved into a full-fledged university providing a diverse choice of undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Now, the university has been recognized by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) for APEL.A Assessment Centre with ‘internal’ status. Today, AMU has embarked its new journey to play an important role in creating an alternative pathway to access higher education, for all Malaysian community. AMU offers APEL-T6 and APEL-T7 entrance criteria for all our homegrown Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree programmes. Our aim is to facilitate individuals who have work experience but without conventional tertiary credentials an option to pursue academic education. This effort is to ensure that higher educational opportunities are extended and accessible to adult learners to progress in the context of lifelong learning while improving their quality of life.

What is APEL?
A systematic process that involves identification of knowledge gained, documentation of evidence and assessment of prior experential learning to determine the extent to which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes for access to a programme of study and award of credits.
WHAT IS APEL.A?
Accreditation of prior experiential learning for the purposes of admission/access into a programme of study under the various Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF) levels.
WHY APEL?
APEL established to provide an alternative entry to those who have less formal education sufficient to pursue higher. APEL encourages individuals to improve their knowledge continually leading to the award of a formal qualification certificate. This in turn will provide a better chance in the career development of the individual.
APEL.A ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor LEVEL
- Malaysian citizen/ expatriate working in Malaysia
- Must be 21 years old and above
- Possessed relevant working experience
- Pass the APEL.A Assessment
master level
- Malaysian citizen/ expatriate working in Malaysia
- Must be 30 years old and above
- Possessed education qualification equivalent to university entry qualifications such as ‘A-Level’, ‘STPM’, Pre-University certificate, Diploma or equivalent
- More than 5 years of working experience
- Pass the APEL.A Assessment

Bachelor Level
Aptitude Test (30%)
- Aptitude Test is a form of assessment to evaluate the prior learning of the applicant and carries 30% of the total APEL.A assessment for the Bachelor’s Degree level programmes. The Aptitude Test will take two (2) hours
Portfolio (70%)
- Applicant’s Portfolio (either in Bahasa Malaysia or English) will be forwarded to APEL Assessment Centre to be assessed by the appointed assessor for approval. Applicant will receive the decision within 21 working days of submitting the completed portfolio. If the committee is uncertain with the evidence presented in the portfolio, other form of assessments shall be carried out.
Master Level
Aptitude Test (40%)
- The Aptitude Test carries 40% of the total APEL.A assessment for the Master’s degree and Postgraduate level programmes. The duration of the Aptitude Test is two and a half (2.5) hours
Portfolio (40%)
- The applicant will be required to submit Portfolio (either in Bahasa Malaysia or English) to the APEL Assessment Centre to be assessed by the appointed assessor for approval. If the assessors are uncertain about the authenticity, sufficiency, or relevancy of the evidence presented in the portfolio, they may request to meet the applicant for verification or validation purposes. The Portfolio assessment contributes to the 40% of the total APEL.A assessment for the coursework.
Interview (20%)
- Upon successful completion of the Portfolio and Aptitude test assessment. This is a structured oral interview-based assessment to assess the applicant’s skills and knowledge/competencies to undertake tertiary studies. The interview assessment contributes to 20% of the total APEL.A assessment.
APPLICATIOn
- Applicants are advised to apply for APEL.A at least SIX (6) months before the date of intake/admission/enrolment of the University programmes.
- The validity period of APEL.A certificate is 5 years
